UCLA’s Director of Admissions, Mae Jennifer Shores tweeted the following pearl of wisdom yesterday:
App faux pas: listing many “just-in-time” (i.e., in the last yr) extra-curricular activities to make up for a history of few or 0.
This is one mistake we see many candidates make. Late in the application process they realize that their “extra-curricular” activities are almost non-existant and rush to “fill in the blanks.”
We’ve written previously that a great MBA application can be years in the making — and this is one prime example! Hopefully you’re already active in a number of community and/or extra-curricular activities that you care about. Ideally, you’ll be demonstrating your leadership potential through your leadership contributions in those activities.
If this is a “flat spot” in your application, then don’t delay! Start getting involved in a ommunity and/or extra-curricular activity that you enjoy … and where you can make a difference! What are you waiting for? This doesn’t get better by waiting …
